Proposition 8 Essay for English Class

Assignment was to state both sides of the argument, state what the proposition was and then state our opinions. Here is what i wrote, I thought it was pretty good, sorry if it's lengthy. This is just my opinion, so if you have a different opinion, I respect that, and I'm not trying to sway one way or the other. Just think it is well written.

Proposition 8 is an ammendment to the constitution of California defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. In the year 2000, prop. 22, stating the same thing, was passed by vote. However, it was then overturned by judges. If prop. 8 is passed, marriage will be strictly between a man and a woman, but domestic partnership will still be in place between both straights and homosexuals.

Those who are in favor of prop. 8 say that marriage is traditionally between a man and a woman and should remain that way. The definition of marriage shouldn't be changed because of the small minority of people who are different. People against prop. 8 say that the proposition will strip the homosexual community of their basic constitutional rights and keep them from living a happy and fullfilling life. Gay marriage being taught in schools was also part of the argument, but it is vaguely mentioned and doesn't seem to be a part of the main concept and argument. Constitutional rights is the main suject of discrepency, everything else is minor.

There seems to be a religious twist to the argument as well, but that isn't really mentioned when you hear about the two sides of the argument. A few lawsuits have been filed against churches that have refused to marry homesexuals stating that it was against the churches religion. This would put me in favor of prop. 8, I do not think that our religious freedoms should be threatened. Churches shouldn't face charges for the decision not to marry gays, and they shouldn't be forced to do things against their beliefs.

In my opinion, this whole thing can be compared to someone who can't swim. This person decides to go to the state legislature and complain about all the public pools being a threat to his safety. He then demands that a law be passed making all public swimming pools no deeper than 3 feet so that he can safely go in them. He argues that if a law isn't passed, his constitutional rights of persuit of happiness will be threatened. In a sense, homosexuals are doing the same things. They are pressing their problems on the rest of us, and making it out to seem like everyone else has the problem, not them. Everyone deserves to have the same rights under the constitution, but we all shouldn't have to walk on eggshells around everyone whose different. It seems every year multiple groups pop up demanding more and more rights, and it slowly constricts the rights, values, and beliefs of others, as well as what our country was founded on. Pretty soon, people will be getting rights and in the process others will lose them because of it.

Punk As F*ck

Kick Rocks (verb) - To tell someone to leave, in the same sense as 'piss off' or 'get outta here'.

The term descended from the fact that when people are lonely, they are sometimes literally seen kicking rocks as they walk, out of their boredom/depression...etc.

"No one wants you here, kick rocks before I kick your ass."

Here are a few rough drafts/ideas I am working on improving. I have a notebook I carry around, and i sketch ideas and stuff into it. So these are just a few examples. I may end up publishing the whole process. Example: Picture of the sketch, the outline, the coloring, then shading. But this is all new to me so it may not be for a while.
